DNS Responses

• Many DNS responses return the answer along with multiple entries about the name server(s) queried as well as additional information

• The answer gives the domain name and IP address of the targeted host

• An authoritative answer gives the domain name of authoritative name server(s) for the zone

• An additional answer gives any other information that the name server thinks that you might need

• • Typically, this is the domain names and IP addresses of the zone’s primary and secondary name servers
  • • This way, the client or querying server can cache this information
  • All DNS responses include a TTL
  • • Tells the client or querying server how long the information may be cached
