• Hosts that are members of a group will listen to the Membership Reports sent by other hosts:

• • If they see that another host sends a Membership Report for a group that they are in, they will not send a Membership Report
  • This avoids the “ack-implosion” problem

• Membership reports are sent to the multicast address of the group being reported on

• Leave reports are typically sent to the “all routers” address of 224.0.0.2

• When a host sends a leave report, the multicast router typically will send a Membership Query

• • If there are no responses, the router will stop forwarding the multicast traffic
