Types of Multicast Protocols
Multicasting protocols are strictly divided into two types
- Local area (IGMP)
- Wide area (DVMRP, PIM)
- DVMRP: Distance-Vector Multicast Routing Protocol
- PIM: Protocol Independent Multicast
Local area multicasting is used for
- Configuration and service advertisements
- Management of local and wide area multicast memberships
Wide area multicasting is used mostly for audio and video distribution
- The most common protocols are DVMRP and PIM
- DVMRP uses IGMP for inter-router messaging
- Edge routers run both IGMP with wide area protocols
