Broadcast Addresses

• Sometimes it is necessary for an IP packet to be broadcast to all hosts on a subnet

• Each network typically uses a broadcast address with all 1’s in the host part

• • 26.255.255.255
  • 128.66.255.255
  • 192.178.16.255

• The address 255.255.255.255 is also used for local-network (limited) broadcast

• • Routers must never forward these packets
  • • Exception: DHCP/BOOTP relay agents change destination address
