Notation (Cont.)
IPv4 addresses can be expressed as IPv6 addresses by pre-pending 96 zeros
- I.e., ::149.112.240.156
- Mostly depreciated
Rather than a netmask, IPv6 uses a prefix
- Takes on values between 0 and 128
- Typical values: 32, 40, 48, 64
- But like a v4 netmask, it indicates the boundary between the network and host parts of an address
- Similar notation
- I.e., FE80::/48
- 48 high order bits used for routing
- 80 low order bits used for subnet + host addresses
