The Big Differences

• ICMPv6 = ICMPv4 + IGMP + ARP

• In other words, ICMPv6 supports

• • Multicasting (group management)
  • MAC address resolution (neighbor solicitation)

• All nodes are multicast aware

• • This allows a number of advanced features including address autoconfiguration

• Some ICMPv6 informational messages allow options to be appended

• • Not all options are valid with all messages
