• Nodes request the MAC addresses of the neighbors by sending neighbor solicitations

• • Sent to MAC multicast or broadcast address
  • Valid options: source link layer address

• Nodes respond to solicitations with neighbor advertisements

• • They may also periodically advertise
  • Valid options: target link layer address

• Nodes cache the results of recent neighbor solicitations and try to refresh them periodically

• Also used periodically for reachability testing

• • In this case multicasting is not used
