Background
There are several blocks of IP address space reserved for private use:
- 10.0.0.0/8
- 172.16.0.0/12
- 192.168.0.0/16
- These are also referred to as unroutable addresses
These addresses can be used by any person or organization in a private network
- Helps ease configuration and provide large numbers of IP addresses to organizations that cannot or will not get enough public IP addresses
However, devices using these addresses CANNOT be connected directly to the Internet!
- It is illegal for an address in these ranges to appear on a public IP network
