Real Time Media
Real time applications are best suited for UDP
- Voice, music, and video in particular
- Low end-to-end delay is extremely important
- Small amounts of loss are tolerable
- Some loss can be hidden by the codec
- VoIP, live music, and live video
Streaming audio and video (RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, etc.) also use UDP
- Receiver-side buffering hides some delays and jitter
